FMU Tennis Teams beat Georgia Southwestern 4-1

AMERICUS, GA – The Francis Marion University men's and women's tennis teams both defeated Georgia Southwestern State University by 4-1 scores on Sunday (April 14) in the regular season finale for both squads.

Sunday's matches were moved up to an 8 a.m. start after the threat of impending weather, and then delayed for several hours by weather before they could be completed.

The 31st-ranked Patriot men finish the regular season 10-9 overall and 2-7 in Peach Belt Conference play, a three-win improvement over the 2018 campaign. The FMU women cap off their regular season with a 14-7 overall record and 4-5 mark in the PBC, a five-win improvement over last season.

The men will be the eighth seed for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, and will take on the regular-season champion and top seed, Columbus State University, in the first round on Friday (April 19) at 9 a.m. The Patriot women will be the sixth seed for the PBC Tournament, and will face the winner of Monday's regular-season finale between the University of North Georgia and USC Aiken in Friday's first round. The women's matches will begin at noon.

Francis Marion will host both the men's and women's tournaments at the Dr. Eddie Floyd/Florence Tennis Center for the seventh consecutive year.

In the men's contest, FMU snatched the doubles point thanks to wins by juniors Matheo Espinoza and Mauricio Guerrero at the No.2 position (6-3), and by freshman Brandon Sweeney and sophomore Matt Astell (6-2) at the No.3 spot.

The Patriots clinched the match with straight-set victories at the No.2-4 singles positions. Astell won 6-2, 6-2 at No.2, Espinoza was victorious 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) at No.3, and Guerrero grabbed a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No.4 spot for FMU.

On the women's side, Francis Marion once again took a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point. Freshmen Denise Hartmann and Eva Zannier snatched a quick 6-1 victory at the No.3 spot, with sophomores Fredrika Regner and Elisa Lang following suit with a 6-1 win at the top position.

In singles play, the Patriots stretched their lead to 3-0 with wins by Regner (6-2, 7-5) and Hartman (6-0, 7-5) at the No.1 and No.2 positions. GSW got on the board with a win at No.3 singles, but Zannier clinched the FMU victory with a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) victory at the No.4 spot.
