Broeseler delivers 4-3 victory for FMU Men, Patriot Women win 6-1

FLORENCE, SC – Junior Henri Broeseler delivered a come-from-behind three-set win (4-6, 6-4, 7-5) at No.6 singles to hand 26th-ranked Francis Marion University a 4-3 victory over Young Harris College, Saturday afternoon (March 30) in Peach Belt Conference men's tennis action.  The 48th-ranked FMU women's team took advantage of a short-handed Young Harris squad to claim a 6-1 win, also on Saturday.

The Francis Marion men improve to 9-6 overall and 1-4 in the PBC, while the FMU women up their marks to 12-5 and 2-3.  The two Patriot teams were to have hosted nationally ranked University of North Georgia on Sunday, but those matches have been postponed until Wednesday at 2 p.m. due to the threat of rain on Sunday.  The matches will still take place on FMU's Kassab Courts.

The men's match came down to the final contest at No.6 singles.  After dropping the first set, Broeseler rallied to win the next two, clinching the win on his sixth match point.

Francis Marion took the doubles point as all three teams won by 6-3 decisions: the 25th-ranked doubles team of sophomores William Anth-Forsberg and Charles Hutchings at No.1, juniors Matheo Espinoza and Mauricio Guerrero at No.2, and freshman Brandon Sweeney and sophomore Matt Astell at No.3.

In singles action, Francis Marion took a commanding 3-0 advantage after Sweeney won at the No.4 spot 6-1, 6-2 and Guerrero was victorious 6-1, 6-3 at the No.3 position.  However, the Mountain Lions claimed wins at positions No.1, No.2, and No.5 to deadlock the match at 3-3 setting the stage for Broeseler's win.

In the women's match, Young Harris defaulted at two of the three doubles positions allowing FMU to take a 1-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions also defaulted at No.6 singles to give the Patriots a 2-0 margin.  FMU sophomore Nikita Berger and freshman Eva Zannier both claimed 6-0, 6-0 victories at No.5 and No.4 singles respectively to clinch the match.

Sophomore Fredrika Regner also earned a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10) singles win at the top spot and sophomore Elisa Lang was victorious 7-5, 6-2 at No.3.
