The Francis Marion University men's and women's tennis teams will host the second-annual City of Florence College Tennis Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, to open their 2019 schedules. The event will be played at the Dr. Eddie Floyd/Florence Tennis Center.
Eight teams will be competing in the tournament including Lander University, University of Mount Olive, Newberry College, Barton College, Augusta University, Wingate University, Bluefield State College, and Francis Marion.
The two-day event is open to the public and admission is free.
The bracketed men's tournament will get underway at 2 p.m. on Friday with FMU facing Barton, 11th-ranked Wingate vs Augusta, Newberry vs Mount Olive, and fifth-ranked Lander vs Bluefield State. The semifinals and back-draw will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, while the finals, third/fourth, fifth/sixth, and seventh/eighth place matches will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The women's bracket will start at 4 p.m. on Friday with Francis Marion playing Newberry, Mount Olive vs Lander, Augusta vs Bluefield State, and Barton vs 23rd-ranked Wingate. The semifinals and back-draw will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, while the finals, third/fourth, fifth/sixth, and seventh/eighth place matches are scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m.
FMU head coach Garth Thomson welcomes back seven returning lettermen from the 2018 men's squad that finished 7-11, including sophomore William Anth-Forsberg who played the No.1 singles spot for the Patriots.
The women return four letterwinners from last year's 9-9 squad.
Following the tournament, the Patriot women will host Erskine College on Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. on FMU's Kassab Courts.
