HARTSVILLE, SC – Sophomore midfielder Jafet Santiago delivered the match-winning score with 53 seconds left in the first overtime period as seventh-ranked Francis Marion University escaped a road trip to local-rival Coker University with a soggy 2-1 non-conference victory on Wednesday evening (Oct. 30).
Francis Marion (11-2-1) will return to Peach Belt Conference play this weekend with a key home match against Clayton State University on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on Hartzler Field. FMU and the Lakers are two of the four teams currently tied for the conference lead.
After launching a season-high 28 shots on Saturday at Georgia Southwestern State University, the Patriots posted 25 shots on Wednesday, while Coker managed nine. Francis Marion earned twice as many corner kicks, 12-6, as did the Cobras.
Santiago's winning tally came on a long shot that slipped past the hands of Coker goalkeeper Giancarlo Martinez at the 99:07 mark. It was Santiago's fourth score of 2019 and his second match-winner.
Patriot junior goalkeeper Maximiliano Rocco needed to make only two saves en route to his 11th win of the year. He did however have his scoreless minutes streak stopped at 308:46.
Coker's Christian Provenzano delivered a through-ball to Markos Touroukis, who scored at the 35:30 mark to put the Cobras up 1-0.
The Patriots found the equalizing goal off the foot of senior midfielder Travis Cooke at 73:58. Just a few moments later, Martinez made a diving save to keep the match tied, punching a shot by FMU sophomore Sidney Warden out of bounds. Cooke later hit the post with an effort in the 86th minute.
Cooke paced the Patriots with six shots, while Santiago and sophomore forward Alvaro Zamora registered five apiece.
FMU completes the season sweep of Coker, having beaten the Cobras 5-0 on Sept. 7 in Florence.
