Patriot Men throttle Clayton State for third straight win

MORROW, GA – Francis Marion University picked up its third straight win, dominating Clayton State University 6-1 in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action on Saturday (Oct. 20).

FMU (7-5-0, 3-2-0) returns to Hartzler Field for Senior Night on Wednesday (Oct. 24) as they host USC Aiken at 7 p.m. The Patriots will honor their five seniors with an on-field ceremony prior to kickoff.

The six goals are the most in a PBC match for the Patriots since a 7-3 win over Georgia Southwestern State University in 2012. The five-goal margin is the largest in a conference contest for FMU under seventh-year head coach John Campbell, and the biggest in a Peach Belt match in 11 seasons.

Francis Marion took the lead quickly, striking in the fourth minute. Senior Oliver Drakenhammar collected the ball at the top of the box, laid it off to sophomore Jonas Dovland, and Dovland slid it in for his fourth goal of the season.

The Patriots doubled their lead at the 27:22 mark. Freshman Martin Coughlan intercepted a pass in the midfield, drove into the Clayton State half, then picked out Drakenhammar, who made it 2-0 with his fourth of the year and 14th of his career.

FMU nearly went ahead by three in the 30th minute, but were denied by the post twice and Lakers freshman goalkeeper Kari Puustinen twice, in a wild 23-second sequence.

CSU (2-9-2, 1-4-0) got a goal back less than a minute later, as freshman Brad Kay nodded home a cross from junior Chevaun Blake.

The Patriots took their attack to another level in the second half, thanks to a bevy of freshmen. Sam Pollard made it 3-1 at the 55:57 mark, burying a left-footed free kick for his third goal of the season.

Sidney Warden netted the next two for FMU, sending Puustinen the wrong way on a penalty kick, and then tapping one home from in close, following a cross from Isaiah Lamont. Warden leads the Patriots with six goals on the season. In the 87th minute, Michael Bah slipped Yannick Grader through on goal, and Grader slid it under the on-rushing goalkeeper for his first collegiate tally.

FMU took 31 shots to Clayton State's 13, and held a 21-7 advantage in shots on goal. Francis Marion also had six corner kicks to the Lakers' three.

Patriots' freshman goalkeeper Kristoffer Gregenaes made a career-high six saves, while Puustinen made 15 stops for CSU.
