FLORENCE, SC – An own goal with 7:43 remaining gave Francis Marion University a muddy 1-0 victory over local-rival Coker College, Wednesday evening (Oct. 10) in non-conference men's soccer action.
FMU evens its season mark at 5-5-0 and will complete its three-match home stand with a Peach Belt Conference contest against Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The deciding sequence came as Patriot sophomore Adrian Merino served the ball into the 6-yard box from the left side. A Coker defender and graduate student goalkeeper Zach Watson collided and the ball slipped behind them and rolled over the goal line.
Following the score, neither side was able to register another shot attempt.
Francis Marion outshot the Cobras (3-6-0) by a narrow 7-6 margin and held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. FMU now leads the all-time series with Coker by a 22-9-7 count.
Patriot freshman goalkeeper Kristoffer Gregenaes was forced to make only one save, that coming in the 81st minute on a 10-yard shot by Christian Provenzano.
Watson made five stops in the Cobra goal.
Provenzano had a shot from inside the penalty area glance off the crossbar in the 26th minute, while of FMU's six first-half shots, four were on target.
Seniors Oliver Drakenhammar and Gaspard Mianne, along with sophomore Jonas Dovland, led the Patriots with two shots apiece. Dovland forced a sprawling save by Watson in the 65th minute that resulted in an FMU corner kick.
The young Patriot starting lineup included two sophomores and five freshmen. The FMU backline of freshman Magnus Hoejland and juniors Matthew Bainbridge and Julian Kersting limited the Cobras to just the one shot on target.
The start of the match was delayed 28 minutes by lightning and the opening 20 minutes were played in a light rain.
