Pair of second-half goals take FMU Men to third straight win

WILSON, NC – The Francis Marion University men's soccer team netted a pair of goals after halftime, including the match-winner from sophomore Jonas Dovland, to collect a 2-1 win at Barton College in a non-conference match Wednesday night (Oct. 3). The win is the third straight for the Patriots, improving their record to 4-4-0.

Francis Marion returns to Hartzler Field on Saturday (Oct. 6) to take on the University of North Georgia in a Peach Belt Conference contest at 7 p.m.

The Patriots dominated play for the majority of the opening stanza, but it was Barton (6-2-0) who opened the scoring in the seventh minute. Sophomore Pol Monells found senior Tolly Beaston near the top of the box, and Beaston chipped the ball over FMU freshman goalkeeper Kristoffer Gregenaes to make it 1-0.

After the Bulldogs scored, Francis Marion controlled the remainder of the half. The Patriots took 15 shots in the opening stanza, forcing four saves out of Barton junior goalkeeper Francisco Noguera.

FMU started the second half strong as well, equalizing less than two minutes after the restart, thanks to a pair of freshmen. After a quickly taken free kick, Sam Pollard found Rory Monks driving toward the net. Monks continued his run into the box, weaved through the Bulldog defense, and buried a shot into the far corner for his first collegiate strike.

After scoring the opening goal in Saturday's win at Flagler, Dovland was at it again for the Patriots, this time providing the match-winner. After picking the ball up in the midfield, he played it out wide to senior Gaspard Mianne. Dovland continued his run, received a return feed from Mianne, and slotted the ball past Noguera at the 83:48 mark to put FMU ahead for good.

The Bulldogs created one more chance in the final minutes, but Monells' attempt was blocked by the Francis Marion defense.

Gregenaes registered three saves in the FMU net, while Noguera made seven saves for Barton.

The Patriots outshout the Bulldogs 32-9 on the night, and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
