Drakenhammar lifts FMU Men to first conference win

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Senior Oliver Drakenhammar scored the game-winning goal and added an assist to help Francis Marion University beat Flagler College 2-1 in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action on Saturday (Sept. 29).

The Patriots (3-4, 1-1) will take a break from conference action on Wednesday (Oct. 3) as they visit Barton College at 7 p.m. Francis Marion returns to Hartzler Field on Saturday (Oct. 6) to take on the University of North Georgia at 7 p.m.

Francis Marion opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Sophomore Jonas Dovland won the ball back in the midfield, and found Drakenhammar. Dovland continued his run toward goal, took a pass from Drakenhammar, went around a Flagler defender, and tucked a shot into the far corner to put the Patriots up 1-0.

The duo nearly combined for a second goal in the 27th minute. Dovland made a run into the box and centered the ball for Drakenhammar, but the senior could not get away a clean strike, and the Saints defense was able to clear it away.

The best chance of the opening stanza for Flagler (2-6, 1-1) came at the 31:43 mark. Following a corner kick, the ball fell to senior Keiron Matthews at the back post. Matthews got off a point-blank shot, but FMU freshman goalkeeper Kristoffer Gregenaes made the stop to keep the lead intact heading into halftime.

The Saints evened the score in the 57th minute. Sophomore Kyle Doherty slipped the ball through to junior Henrique Salomao, who fired a low shot past a diving Gregenaes to make it 1-1.

Flagler had an opportunity to grab the lead in the 66th minute, but freshman Dan McGuire's attempt was met by a diving Gregenaes. Freshman Martin Coughlan had a pair of opportunities off of corners at the other end, but sent a header just wide and another attempt high.

In the 81st minute, Coughlan turned into the provider for the game-winner. The midfielder took a pass from senior Gaspard Mianne and found Drakenhammar with a through ball, and the senior slipped it past Flagler sophomore goalkeeper Iwan Roberts to put the Patriots back on top.  For Drakenhammar it was his 13th career goal and second match-winner.

Just 13 seconds later, Gregenaes stopped a chance off the foot of freshman Tryggvi Magnusson to keep FMU in front. Neither team registered another shot over the remainder of the contest, as the Patriots hung on for their second straight win in St. Augustine.

Gregenaes registered four saves in the Francis Marion net, while both shots the Patriots put on goal went past Flagler's Roberts.

The Saints held a 12-8 edge in shots for the match, and a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.
