Second-half PK sinks Patriots 1-0

FLORENCE, SC – A penalty kick by Jordan Skelton 45 seconds into the second half lifted 16th-ranked and unbeaten Lander University to a 1-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over Francis Marion University, Saturday night (Sept. 22) in men's soccer action.

Francis Marion (1-4-0, 0-1-0) will host the University of Mount Olive on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Skelton's score, his third successful penalty kick of the season, came after senior Sinclaire Sandy took a long pass down the right sideline from Skelton and then beat a Patriot defender around the corner and was fouled near the end line in the box.  Skelton first took his shot from the spot and scored before the referee's whistle, so on the re-take he beat FMU goalkeeper Kristoffer Gregenaes with a shot into the upper left 90, although the Patriot freshman did get a hand on the ball.

Francis Marion has a couple of opportunities to score the equalizer later in the second stanza.  Sophomore Jonas Dovland had a long blast from 36 yards out on a free kick that was stopped by Lander freshman goalkeeper Jacob Withers in the 85th minute.

With 25 seconds left, FMU was awarded a free kick in the middle of the field 42 years from the Lander goal. Freshman Oliver Peters served the ball into the left side of the box where freshman Ben Davison headed the ball into the 6-yard box.  The pass went to freshman Rory Monks who headed the ball just outside the right post.

Lander (6-0-0, 1-0-0) outshot the Patriots 9-3 and held a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Gregenaes recorded four saves, while Withers made the one save in his collegiate debut.
