Freshman duo not enough for FMU in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC – Goals from a pair of freshmen were not enough for the Francis Marion University men's soccer team, which fell 4-2 to Queens University of Charlotte in a nonconference match on Saturday night (Sept. 8).

FMU's next match is Wednesday, Sept. 19, on the road against Chowan University at 4 p.m. The Patriots will return to Hartzler Field on Saturday, Sept. 22, for their Peach Belt Conference opener against Lander University.

Francis Marion (1-3-0) opened the scoring with the first shot on goal for either team in the 23rd minute. Good transition play from the Patriots led to a two-on-one, and senior Oliver Drakenhammar slid a pass over to freshman Sidney Warden, who found the far corner for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Royals (3-1-0) evened the score just before halftime. FMU freshman goalkeeper Kristoffer Gregenaes stopped a close-range shot from Louis Goldsack, but before the Patriots could clear the rebound, an FMU foul gave Queens a penalty kick. Omer Okyar sent Gregenaes the wrong way, tying the score with just 1:41 left in the opening half.

The hosts then took the lead two minutes after the restart. Michael Hornsby delivered a cross into the box from the left wing, and Keegan Burton headed it home to put the Royals in front.

FMU answered in the 63rd minute. Freshman Sam Pollard created space for himself with a great turn, and fired a low shot past Queens goalkeeper Sebastian Kalk to tie the contest at 2-2.

The match did not stay tied for long, as one minute later, a handball in the FMU box gave the Royals their second penalty kick. Okyar once again took advantage, putting Queens back on top.

In the 89th minute, Alberto Morales ended the Patriots hopes of a comeback, burying a shot from the top of the box for a 4-2 Queens lead.

For the evening, Queens held a 13-11 advantage in shots, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. The Royals took three corner kicks to FMU's two.

Gregenaes made three stops in the FMU net, while Kalk recorded four saves for the Royals.
