The Warden restores order in 6-0 Patriot shutout win

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman Sydney Warden scored a pair of first-half goals to spark Francis Marion University to a 6-0 blanking of Southern Wesleyan University, Wednesday evening (Sept. 5) in non-conference men's soccer action.

Francis Marion improves to 1-2-0 with its largest shutout victory in 11 seasons and its highest scoring match in six years.  The Patriots will travel to face Queens University of Charlotte on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m.  The next home match for FMU will be Sept. 22 against nationally ranked Lander University at 7 p.m.

Warden gave Francis Marion a 1-0 advantage in the sixth minute when he took a pass from sophomore Adrian Merino, settled the ball, and turned and fired from six-yards out.

FMU then blew the contest open by scoring three times between the 19th and 25th minutes.  Freshman Isaiah Lamont gathered a short clearance by the Warrior defense and knocked home a bending 15-yard shot at the 18:59 mark.  Senior Oliver Drakenhammar took a through ball from freshman Sam Pollard and toe-poked a shot into the right corner of the netting from 11-yards out at 23:48, and only 41 seconds later, Warden scored his second tally on a give-and-go sequence with Pollard.  Warden passed the ball out to the right side, where Pollard crossed the ball back into the penalty area and Warden headed home a 5-yard shot.  The London, England, native now leads FMU with three goals this season.

Drakenhammar registered his second goal in the 71st minute when he received a through ball from freshman Martin Coughlan and fired a 15-yard scoring strike. Pollard added the final goal 52 seconds later at 71:49 when he drilled an 18-yard attempt from the top of the penalty area.

Francis Marion outshot the Warriors 30-2, including a 16-0 margin over the final 45 minutes.  FMU held a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

FMU freshman goalkeeper Kristoffer Gregenaes earned his first collegiate win, while recording two saves.  Southern Wesleyan goalkeeper Miguel Uribe made eight stops in the contest.

Pollard again led FMU in shots, this time with five.
