Chargers edge FMU men 3-1

FLORENCE, SC – Despite holding a 17-6 edge in shots, the Francis Marion University men's soccer team dropped its home opener by a 3-1 score to the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Sunday (Sept. 2) afternoon in non-conference action.

Francis Marion (0-2-0) will entertain Southern Wesleyan University as part of a twinbill at Hartzler Field on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.  The FMU women will play host to Coker College at 5 p.m.

The Patriots outshot the Chargers 8-4 over the opening 45 minutes, but UAH assumed a 2-0 advantage.  A header by FMU senior forward Oliver Drakenhammar in the ninth minute forced a sprawling save by Alabama-Huntsville senior goalkeeper Myles Fullen.

However, the Chargers scored on their initial shot of the match, at 29:16, when Rafa Moreno took a cross from the right side by Khalil Bell and buried a 6-yard shot into the netting.

The margin doubled to 2-0 at the 37:28 mark when Vicente Arratia took a free kick on a fast re-start and Connor Young knocked the resulting ball into the Patriot goal.

Francis Marion freshman Michael Bah narrowed the deficit to 2-1 only 3:16 into the second stanza.  Patriot freshman Sam Pollard began the sequence with a blast from 22 yards out that was saved but not corralled by Fullen.  The rebound went to Bah on the right side of the penalty area and he scored from 13 yards out.

Shots by FMU senior Gaspard Mianne and Pollard missed the target in the 55th and 57th minutes, and Pollard hit the crossbar in the 65th minute as the Patriots looked to equalize.

UAH scored the match-clincher in the 69th minute off the head of Ethan Wilson, thanks to a cross from Young.

In addition to the shot totals, FMU held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.  Patriot freshman goalkeeper Kristoffer Gregenaes recorded one save, while Fullen had seven.

Pollard led FMU with four shots.
