DAHLONEGA, GA – Francis Marion University fell to the University of North Georgia in a tight 3-2 match in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action on Saturday night (Sept. 23).
The Patriots drop to 4-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in PBC play, while UNG improves to 4-3-0 and 1-0-0. FMU will be in action next at Lander University on Wednesday with the start time set for 7:30 p.m. Their first home Peach Belt Conference match for the Patriots will be Sept. 30 against Clayton State University at 5:30 p.m.
After a scoreless first half, North Georgia's sophomore forward Eren Ozer broke the tie with a goal at the 50:39 mark.
Sophomore Jordan Dechere countered one minute later for the Patriots with a goal, assisted by junior Levin Sandmann with 51:50 on the clock. This was Dechere's third goal of the campaign.
In the 57th minute, after a foul inside the 18-yard box, junior midfielder Adam Ferrell squeezed a penalty kick between the reach of FMU goalkeeper Raul Guillamon Bejar and the goal post. Freshman Matheus Abreu added another score at the 58:02 mark making the score 3-1.
Senior Jevon Williams cut the deficit in half after a cross by Dechere trimming the margin to 3-2 in the 69th minute.
The Patriots attempted three more shots within the last 20 minutes of play, but could not make them count.
North Georgia outshot FMU 23-19 and had nine corner kicks to Francis Marion's eight.
Bejar had eight saves for the Patriots, while UNG junior goalkeeper Matt Sharman had six stops.
