FLORENCE, SC – Junior forward Jonny Cosgrove converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute to lift Flagler College past Francis Marion University 1-0, Saturday night (Sept. 13) in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer action.

The start of the PBC opener for both squads was delayed 45 minutes due to lightning.  FMU drops to 3-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the conference, while Flagler remains unbeaten at 3-0-1 and 1-0-0.

Francis Marion will return to action on Wednesday when the Patriots entertain Tusculum College at 5 p.m. on Hartzler Field.  The match will be the program's annual Sea of Red contest.

Flagler was awarded the penalty kick at the 55:55 mark when an FMU defender was called for a handball in the 6-yard box near the Patriot goal.  It was Cosgrove's fifth tally of the season.

Both teams took 13 shots and Flagler led in corner kicks 9-3.  FMU sophomore goalkeeper Mike Warn registered three saves, but the goal ended his scoreless streak in net at 317:48.

FMU's best scoring opportunity came just 4:03 into the second stanza with the score still deadlocked at 0-0.  Sophomore Jeremy Bonyaa cleared the ball out of the Patriots' defensive end and found the feet of freshman Jayden Doyle along the left sideline.  Doyle angled in slightly and then crossed the ball to freshman Julius Broman who streaking into the 18-yard box.  As Broman took control of the pass, Craggs came off his line and dove to put a one-handed save on Broman's quick shot.

Two minutes later, Doyle had a chance to put FMU on top, but his shot from inside the penalty area was denied by a Saints defender.

The Patriots' last chance to knot the score and force overtime came in the 86th minute when sophomore Shahin Hemat got on the end of a quick flick on, but his one-time shot from 12 yards out was denied by Craggs.
