AIKEN, SC – Freshman Pierre De Caevel led Francis Marion University on the final day as the Patriots finished 17th in the team standings at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate Men's Golf Tournament hosted by USC Aiken.
The University of South Carolina easily captured the team title with a tournament-record score of 813, 35 shots ahead of second-place finishers University of Virginia (848) and UAB (848). Clemson University occupied fourth at 855, while the University of Memphis (859) rounded out the Top-5.
Francis Marion tallied a final-round 313 score to finish its 54 holes at 898.
Freshman Grant Sellers and sophomore John Burghardt led the Patriot golfers as they tied for 60th position in the players' standings. Sellers concluded with a 76-69-80=225 scorecard, while Burghardt finished at 75-72-78=225.
De Caevel shot a final-round 77 and tied for 65th position at 226, while sophomore Jacob Morris (73-76-78=227) tied for 67th and red-shirt freshman McClure Thompson (79-72-84=235) tied for 83rd place.
South Carolina's Will Miles earned medalist honors with a tournament-record score of 13-under-par 197, after shooting rounds of 64, 65, and 68.
The 54-hole tournament was played at the 6,617-yard, par 70 Palmetto Golf Club, which was founded in 1892.
Francis Marion will return to action on March 22-24 at the Furman Intercollegiate Tournament in Greenville, S.C.
