KIAWAH ISLAND, SC - Senior Lars Sandvoll and freshman Grant Sellers each carded 74 rounds on Tuesday (Sept. 10) to lead Francis Marion University to a 12th-place finish at The Invitational at The Ocean Course Tournament hosted by the College of Charleston.
Due to the approach of Hurricane Florence, the 54-hole event was shortened to 36 holes with Tuesday's final round being canceled. The tournament was played on the 7,324-yard, par 72 The Ocean Course.
The team title was decided in a playoff between the College of Charleston (577) and Southern Methodist University (577). All five starters from each team played the par-3, 17th hole with the best four scores determining the total to declare the winner, which was captured by the host Cougars. The University of Maryland finished third at 584.
Francis Marion improved its team score by 15 stroke over Sunday to finish at 315-300=615, eight strokes out of the top 10.
Sandvoll finished tied for 32nd place in the players' standings with a 76-74=150 scorecard. Sellers, a native of McBee playing his first collegiate event, tied for 36th, one stroke back at 77-74=151.
Other Patriot golfers included freshman Pierre De Caveal (80-76=156) tied for 56th, red-shirt freshman McClure Thompson (82-76=158) tied for 65th, and freshman Grainger Howle (88-84=172) tied for 78th position.
SMU's Ollie Osborne earned medalist honors with a 70-71=141 scorecard, edging Jackson Suber of the University of Mississippi by one stroke.
The Patriots will return to action at The River Run Collegiate event, hosted by Davidson College and Charlotte, on Sept. 24-25 in Charlotte.
