KIAWAH ISLAND, SC – Senior Callum McGuigan shot an opening-round 76 on a very tough scoring day that saw no golfer break par, and Francis Marion University stands seventh in the team standings at the East Bay Deli Classic, Sunday (Oct. 29) on Kiawah Island.
The 15-team tournament is being hosted by Charleston Southern University at the 6,911-yard, par 72 Turtle Point Golf Course.
Twenty-sixth-ranked University of Tennessee occupies the top spot in the team standings with a 298 tally. Rutgers University is second at 304, followed by Chattanooga (309), High Point University (311), and Jacksonville State University (312) to round out the Top 5.
The College of Charleston is sixth with a 316 score, one stroke ahead of the Patriots (317).
Art Griffin of Charleston Southern and Adam Gray of Rutgers lead the players' standings with even-par 72 scorecards.
McGuigan is tied for 14th place, while junior Lars Sandvoll carded a 77 score and is tied for 16th position. Other Patriot golfers include senior Marc Casullo (81) tied for 39th place, senior Alessandro Caselli (83) and freshman Jacob Morris (83) tied for 56th, and freshman Michael Rials (89) tied for 84th.
The scoring was so tough that the six FMU golfers combined for only eight birdies.
The tournament will continue with 18 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.
