Francis Marion University juniors Alessandro Caselli and Marc Casullo have been named to the Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars list for the 2016-17 season. The announcement was made recently by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
A total of 260 players at the NCAA Division I level were honored. The two were among a group of eight student-athletes from Palmetto State institutions named to the list.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, have competed in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participated in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his institution.
Caselli, a native of Vimercate, Italy, is majoring in finance and has a 3.98 grade point average, including a perfect 4.0 GPA for the 2017 spring semester.
At 2017 FMU Awards Day ceremony, Caselli received the Wall Street Journal Award in Finance. He is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma national college athlete honor society and Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society, and served on the university's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for 2015-16. He has been named to the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll all three of his years and to the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll for each of his six semesters.
On the course this past season, he played in all 11 events and compiled a team-best 75.0 stroke average. He registered six rounds of par or below par, along with two Top-20 finishes, and seven Top-50 finishes. For his career, he has a 76.3 stroke average for 80 rounds (29 events).
Casullo, a native of Aurora, Ontario, Canada, has a 3.93 GPA as a finance (economics) major.
He served on the SAAC for 2016-17 and is a member of both Beta Gamma Sigma and Chi Alpha Sigma honor societies. He has also been named to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll three times and the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll six times.
This past season, he carded a 75.79 stroke average, while playing in all 11 events. He recorded one Top-15 finish and four Top-50 finishes. His career stroke average stands at 75.63 for 75 rounds (29 events).
Francis Marion recorded eight Top-15 finishes in 11 events during the 2016-17 season, including a pair of seventh-place showings during the spring portion of the schedule. The young squad listed no seniors on its roster.
Last month, the Patriot program received a GCAA All-Academic Team award for the fourth consecutive year.
