AKRON, OH – Junior Marc Casullo fired a final-round one-under-par 71 to pace Francis Marion University on Tuesday (Oct. 4) as the Patriots finished 13th at the University of Akron's The Firestone Invitational golf tournament.
The University of Cincinnati shot the low team score (283) on Tuesday and rallied to win the team title by three strokes over Illinois State University (850-853). The host Zips placed third at 856, followed by the University of Dayton (860) and Eastern Michigan University (862) rounding out the Top 5.
The Patriots tallied a 296 team score over the final round to finish at 886, eight strokes out of the Top 10.
Sophomore Lars Sandvoll was the top FMU finisher in the players' standings. He shot a final-round 74 to finish at 222 and tied for 38th position. Junior Alessandro Caselli carded a 73 on Tuesday to finish at 223 and tied for 44th, while Casullo (74-79-71=224) tied for 51st, junior Callum McGuigan (76-71-78=225) tied for 53rd, and freshman Haakon Andersen (75-75-81=231) tied for 75th.
The 54-hole tournament was played on the 7,125-yard, par-72 Firestone Country Club – North Course.
Austin Squires of Cincinnati shot a 68 on Tuesday to finish at 11-under 205 and captured medalist honors by four strokes.
Francis Marion will return to action on Oct. 17 and 18 at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic hosted by Georgia State University in Duluth, Ga.
