Patriots methodically defeat Saints on Homecoming 84-71

FLORENCE, SC – A 16-0 run midway through the first half and an 8-0 spurt early in the second half allowed Francis Marion University to claim an 84-71 Homecoming win over Flagler College, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 23) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 19-6 overall and 15-5 in the PBC, equaling the program record for conference wins set by the Sweet Sixteen squad in 2004.  The third-place Patriots will have a chance to eclipse that mark on Wednesday when FMU entertains local-rival UNC Pembroke for Senior Night with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off time.

Four Patriots scored in double figures as FMU trailed for only 34 seconds in the contest.  Senior Brandon Parker scored 19 points and handed out a career-high equaling seven assists.  Senior Ryan Davis tallied 18 points, while freshman 6-7 center Winston Hill posted the second double-double of his young career with 17 points and 11 rebounds coming off the FMU bench.  Freshman forward Kailex Stephens chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

Freshman swingman Gedi Jouzapaitis paced Flagler (8-18, 5-15) with a game-high 26 points, including 6-of-9 shooting from behind the three-point arc.  He also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Patriots forced 21 Flagler turnovers and held a commanding 29-8 edge in points-off-turnovers.

FMU snapped a 9-9 deadlock with 16 unanswered points to assume a 25-9 lead with 9:09 left before halftime. Six different Patriots contributed to the run, including three-pointers by Parker, senior Je'Quan Perry, and junior Kendall Wall.  FMU led by as many as 18 in the opening stanza, at 29-11, before settling for a 41-30 halftime advantage.

Flagler quickly closed to within 45-39 after a lay-in by Chris Metzger.  The Patriots responded with eight straight points – three-pointers by Stephens and Parker and a steal and lay-up by Davis – all in a span of 40 seconds.  The spurt resulted in a 53-39 lead and the margin never dipped under double figures for the rest of the contest.  FMU led by 17 on three occasions in the final 13 minutes.

Francis Marion connected on 44.2 percent of its field goal attempts, including 11-of-34 three-point shots, and was 5-of-10 at the free throw stripe.  Flagler hit 54.4 percent of its shots, was 7-of-17 from long range, and hit 2-of-5 foul shots.  Offsetting the percent difference, Francis Marion got off 20 more shots than did the Saints.

The Patriots also committed only eight turnovers, the third single-digit effort over the past five games.
