Missed Opportunities key in FMU loss to second-place Jags

AUGUSTA, GA – Missed opportunities during the final 20 minutes proved decisive as Francis Marion University dropped a 75-70 decision to second-place Augusta University, Wednesday night (Feb. 20) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

Francis Marion, ranked sixth in the initial NCAA Southeast Region poll and in third place in the PBC, drops to 18-6 overall and 14-5 in conference action.

FMU will play host to Flagler College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. as the Patriots celebrate Homecoming 2019.  Admission to Saturday's contest is free.

Freshman 6-7 center Winston Hill came off the bench to lead FMU with a career-high 27 points on 12-of-15 shooting.  Senior Ryan Davis registered 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while junior Jaquez Smith also scored 11 and senior Brandon Parker chipped in 10 points.

The Patriots outshot Augusta from the field (50.9 percent to 43.5 percent) and outrebounded the Jaguars 35-34, but a season-high 22 turnovers (13 in the second half) hurt FMU's cause.

Three turnovers in the final minute, all with game being one possession (73-70), kept FMU from having a chance to tie the contest and possibly force overtime. A pair of free throws by the Jaguars with eight ticks on the clock sealed the win for Augusta (20-5, 16-3).

Deane Williams led the Jaguars with 20 points and 17 rebounds, while Rafael Monteiro added 15 points.

Hill kept the Patriots close in the opening half with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting.  The deficit for FMU hovered between four and eight points most of the opening 20 minutes, but the Jaguars opened a nine-point lead at 43-34 with 19 seconds on the clock.

Smith was fouled on a three-pointer with seven ticks left and his trio of free throws brought the Patriots to within 43-37 at intermission.  The Patriots, who drained 20-of-39 three-point attempts in Monday's road win at Young Harris College, managed only 3-of-13 from long range during the first stanza, and 5-of-20 for the game.

The margin grew to 50-39 with 16:41 remaining, but Francis Marion held the Jaguars without a field goal for over four minutes and rallied to within 51-46.  Back-to-back lay-ins by Hill drew FMU to within 56-53 near the midway point of the second half, but a 6-0 Augusta spurt expanded the lead to 62-53.

A three-point play by Davis, a three-pointer by Smith, and a 15-foot pull-up jumper by senior Je'Quan Perry accounted for an 8-0 Francis Marion run and the deficit was down to one at 62-61 with 6:41 left.

Another inside hoop by Hill again brought the Patriots within a point (67-66) with 4:26 on the clock.  Six straight points by the Jaguars pushed the lead to 73-66, but baskets by Hill and Davis made the margin 73-70 with 1:36 remaining.
