Runs prove crucial for #21 Braves in 91-72 win over FMU

PEMBROKE, NC – No. 21 UNC Pembroke used an 11-0 run to close the first half, a 9-0 spurt midway through the second half, and a late 13-3 run to grab a 91-72 victory over Francis Marion University, Wednesday night (Jan. 30) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

Francis Marion drops to 13-4 overall and 9-3 in the PBC, while UNCP improves to 15-3 and 10-2 following a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament first-round game. The Patriots now return to Florence and will play host to Georgia College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Senior Ryan Davis led FMU with 22 points, while senior Je'Quan Perry scored 19 on 5-of-8 shooting from behind the arc.  Senior Brandon Parker added 12 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

David Strother led four Braves in double figures with 18 points followed by Tyrell Kirk with 17 points and 11 rebounds, James Murray-Boyles with 15 points, and Akia Pruitt with 12 points and 15 rebounds

FMU overcame an early deficit to take a 20-14 lead after a three-pointer by Perry.  A fast-break lay-in by Davis upped the advantage to 24-17 at the 7:00 mark.  A three-pointer by junior point guard Jaquez Smith gave the Patriots a 31-27 lead with 3:05 left in the half, but the Braves scored 11 unanswered points and left for the locker room holding a 38-31 lead.

Both teams came out hot in the second half, at one point combining to make 10 straight shots.  The Braves extended their lead to 55-42, but Francis Marion countered with an 8-0 run to pull within 55-50 after a lay-up by Davis.  The Patriots had opportunities to further cut the deficit, but were unsuccessful and then UNCP scored nine straight points to go up 64-50.

A trio of three-pointers, including two by Perry, fueled an 11-2 FMU spurt that cut the margin to 69-63 with 6:54 remaining.

Two minutes later, the Braves launched into a 13-3 spurt to take an 84-67 advantage.

FMU shot 40.9 percent from the floor, including 12-of-38 from three-point range.  The Braves connected on 47.2 percent of their field goal attempts, including 6-of-22 from behind the arc, and made 17-of-20 free throws.

UNCP held a 50-33 rebounding advantage that led to a 20-6 edge in second-chance points.
