Davis delivers PBC road win at Clayton State

MORROW, GA – Senior guard Ryan Davis utilized a near-record day at the free throw line to score a career-high 31 points and power Francis Marion University to a 98-80 road win at Clayton State University, Saturday afternoon (Jan. 12) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

The game featured two squads that both advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament last season.

Francis Marion improves to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the PBC with its first win on the Lakers' home floor since 2013.  The Patriots will play at Lander University on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., before returning home to entertain Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 3:30 p.m.

While Davis connected on only 7-of-19 field goal attempts, he was near perfect from 15 feet out at the stripe, draining 17-of-18 attempts.  That figure just missed the PBC single-game accuracy mark of 17-of-17.  He also narrowly missed setting an FMU single-game mark as Dennis Sullen made 18-of-22 in 1976 to establish records for makes and attempts, and Joe Thompson holds the Patriot accuracy mark with a 14-of-14 performance in 1981.

Davis also led FMU with eight rebounds and four assists.

Senior swingman Brandon Parker added 22 points for the Patriots, and was 9-of-11 at the free throw stripe, while junior Kendall Wall scored a career-high 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting and a perfect 6-of-6 day at the line.  Parker moved into 23rd place on the FMU career scoring list with 960 points.

As a team, Francis Marion made 37-of-41 free throws, equaling the school record for free throws made in a game, accomplished three times previously and most recently in a 1993 win over USC Aiken.  Over the past three contests the Patriots are 102-of-126 (81%) at the charity stripe.

Guard Arusha Hunter led Clayton State (4-8, 1-5) with a career-high 30 points.

With Clayton State holding an early 8-7 lead, junior point guard Jaquez Smith made three free throws to give FMU the lead for good.  That ignited a 7-0 spurt.  After the Lakers pulled with 14-12, Smith scored six straight points to start a 13-4 run that put the Patriots up 27-16.

Francis Marion closed the final 4:01 of the first half with an 11-2 run to take a commanding 60-40 advantage at intermission.  FMU made all 16 of its free throws in the opening 20 minutes and connected on 54.3 percent of its field goal attempts, including six three-pointers.

A trio of free throws by Parker gave the Patriots their largest lead of the game at 65-42 early in the second stanza.  The margin was 19 at 76-57 at the 11:52 mark when Clayton State mounted a brief rally.  A 13-2 spurt trimmed the margin to 78-70 with 6:48 remaining.

FMU led 82-74 with 4:54 on the clock, but the Patriots converted 12-of-14 free throws to go along with a Wall dunk and a Kailex Stephens' lay-in to hold off the Lakers.

Francis Marion forced 16 Clayton State turnovers and converted them into 28 points.

FMU shot 44.8 percent from the floor, while the Lakers shot 41.9 percent.  Both squads were an identical 9-of-27 from behind the three-point arc.
