Alexander shines on Senior Day in romp over Bobcats

FLORENCE, SC – Senior 6-7 forward Judah Alexander scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds to help lead Francis Marion University to a 102-69 victory over Georgia College, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 24) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

Francis Marion celebrated Senior Day by trailing for only 47 seconds at 4-2 early in the game.  The Patriots improve to 19-8 overall and finished third in the PBC final standings with a 14-8 mark – the team's most conference wins in 14 seasons.  FMU ended it regular season with nine wins in its last 11 contests.

The Patriots will host sixth-seeded University of North Georgia on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a quarterfinal game in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

Alexander connected on 7-of-11 field goal attempts, including a couple of emphatic slam dunks, and was 7-of-9 at the foul line.  During the contest, Alexander passed Carlton Farr for eighth on FMU career rebounding list with 648 boards and passed Bob Wilson and tied Dustin Jones for 25th position on the scoring list with 888 points.

Senior guard Detrek Browning led the Patriots with 22 points and five assists. Browning also penciled his name in the Patriot record book once again as he equaled Farr for most consecutive games scoring in double figures at 53.  In the process, he also drew to within 39 points of the PBC career scoring record.

Senior forward Warren Specht scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting, and junior guard Ryan Davis tallied 15 points, eight assists, six rebounds, and three steals off the bench.  Junior swingman Brandon Parker chipped in 14 points.

Freshman guard Jordan Thomas led the Bobcats with 19 points as Georgia College ends its season at 11-17 and 7-15.

Leading by a single point at 13-12, an Alexander jump shot started a 9-0 run that expanded the lead to double figures at 22-12. Six Patriots contributed to a 19-4 spurt later in the first half gave the Patriots a 43-19 advantage.  FMU led 45-24 at halftime after holding the Bobcats to 35.7 percent shooting over the opening 20 minutes.

The margin never dipped below 20 points in the second half, with the final margin of 33 being the largest of the game,  Francis Marion shot a sizzling 66.7 percent (18-of-27) over the final 20 minutes, including nailing 6-of-11 three-point attempts.

Led by Davis, the Patriot bench outscored the Bobcat reserves 30-5.  Francis Marion also held a commanding 46-25 rebounding edge.

For the game, FMU shot 55.7 percent from the field, was 10-of-24 from behind the three-point arc, and hit 24-of-29 free throws.  The Bobcats finished at 40.3 percent, were 8-of-28 from three-point range, and made 7-of-15 shots at the free throw stripe. 

In addition to Alexander, Browning, and Specht, the Patriot also recognized senior guard John Jenkins prior to tip-off.
