Browning-led Patriots push past Flagler 66-58

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – Senior guard Detrek Browning scored a game-high 24 points and Francis Marion University used a 12-0 run to start the second half and the Patriots held off Flagler College for a 66-58 Peach Belt Conference victory on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 17) in men's basketball action.

Francis Marion improves to 18-7 overall and 13-7 in the PBC with its fifth consecutive win.  The Patriots assure themselves of a first-round home game in the Peach Belt Tournament on Feb. 28.

FMU will travel to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. start before returning home on Feb. 24 for the regular season-finale and Senior Day against Georgia College. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Along with Browning, junior swingman Brandon Parker scored in double-figures with 13 points. Browning also finished with four assists and three steals, while extending his school-record career point total to 2,254, now only 79 points shy of the PBC career mark.

Senior forward Cortlin Davis led the Saints (9-15, 6-14) with 15 points and nine rebounds, followed by sophomore Damerit Brown with 13 points.

Flagler turned over the ball 22 times compared to the Patriots' 11 miscues, and FMU held a commanding 27-4 edge in points off turnovers.

The Patriots jumped out to a quick lead with a 9-0 run capped off by a junior guard Ryan Davis three-pointer at the 15:56 mark. Francis Marion never trailed in the contest.  FMU would keep expanding its lead throughout the first half and took a 14-point lead (38-24) at intermission after sophomore point guard Jaquez Smith canned a three-pointer just before the horn.

Twelve straight points out of locker room to start the second half expanded the lead to 50-24 with 16:44 remaining in the contest. With the score 54-37 at the 9:32 mark, Flagler went on a 10-0 run to draw within seven points (54-47) with 6:21 left.  However, the Patriots would hold their lead for the rest of the game although the Saints got within six points in the final minute.

Two free throws by Browning with 31 ticks left sealed the win.

FMU shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field, including 9-of-21 from behind the three-point arc. The Patriots were 13-of-18 from the free-throw stripe. The Saints were 22-of-51 from the floor (43.1 percent) and 5-of-13 from three-point range and 9-of-18 at the foul line.
