Patriots capture key PBC win as Browning and Parker combine for 49

FLORENCE, SC – Two nights after combining for 51 points, senior guard Detrek Browning and junior forward Brandon Parker got together to score 49 on Wednesday night (Feb. 14) to lead Francis Marion University to an 80-65 win over Augusta University in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

Interestingly enough, a key 8-0 spurt midway through the second half occurred with Browning on the bench as the Patriots improve to 17-7 overall and 12-7 in conference play with their fourth consecutive victory and seventh in the past eight games.  FMU retains sole possession of third place in the conference standings and opens a two-game lead over fourth-place Augusta and USC Aiken.

FMU plays its next two contests on the road beginning with a 3:30 p.m. start at Flagler College on Saturday.  The next home game for the Patriots will be a Senior Day match-up with Georgia College on Feb. 24 at 3:30 p.m.

Browning scored a game-high 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 6-of-9 from behind the three-point arc.  He was 5-of-5 at the free throw line, while also registering three steals and three assists. Already the single-game scoring leader (41) and career scoring leader (2230) at FMU, Browning also set the school's single-season scoring mark with 611 points eclipsing the old record of 592 points set by Robert Moore during the 1979-80 season.

Parker tallied 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including four three-pointers.  Junior guard Ryan Davis chipped in 12 points and five assists off the Patriot bench as the Patriot reseves outscored the Augusta subs 21-5.

Junior 6-8 forward Deane Williams led Augusta (13-12, 10-9) with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while senior 6-6 forward Tamyrik Fields added 18 points.

Francis Marion forced 18 Augusta turnovers and FMU held a 20-9 edge in points-off-turnovers, while also leading in 11-2 in fast-break points.

Trailing 6-4, the Patriots put together an 18-5 run that included 11 points from Browning to double up the Jaguars at 22-11.  Augusta closed the gap to 25-19, but an 11-4 FMU spurt put Francis Marion ahead 36-23.  Augusta trimmed the margin to 39-32 at halftime.

The lead shrank to two points on three occasions in the second stanza, the final time at 50-48.  The margin was six at 54-48 with 9:05 left when Browning went to the bench for a rest.  Junior reserve Victor Hunt started the decisive 8-0 run with a three-pointer.  Davis came up with a steal and subsequent fast-break dunk and then canned a three-pointer from the top-of-the-key to push the Patriot advantage to 62-48 with 7:21 left.  Altogether FMU scored 12 straight points.

Augusta did pull within seven points (65-58) with 5:04 remaining, but a rested Browning scored five straight to swell the lead back to double digits.  A three-pointer by Browning with 1:22 on the clock gave FMU its largest lead at 77-60.

FMU connected on 49.1 percent of its field goal attempts, including 13-of-28 from behind the three-point arc, and was 11-of-13 at the charity stripe.  Augusta shot 46.2 percent, was only 6-of-15 from long range, and made 11-of-14 free throws.
