Patriot men’s basketball receives votes in latest national rankings

The Francis Marion University men's basketball squad was among the other teams receiving votes in the latest Division II Sports Information Directors of America national rankings.

In the Nov. 28 poll, the 4-0 Patriots sit just outside the Top-25 with five votes.

Four programs from the Southeast Region are in the poll: Lincoln Memorial University at No.2, Queens University of Charlotte at No.5, Carson-Newman College at No. 20, and UNC Pembroke at No.25.

Francis Marion will open Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday (Dec. 2) at the University of North Georgia with tip-off set for 3:30 p.m. Following a break for exams, FMU will then visit the University of Mount Olive on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m., before returning home to face PBC-member Georgia Southwestern State University on Dec. 17 at 3:30 p.m. and Columbus State University on Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Francis Marion senior Detrek Browning leads the conference with a 25.3 points per game average, while shooting 37.1 percent from behind the three-point arc. Browning also recently moved into third-place on the FMU all-time scoring list with 1,720 career points. He is fifth among active NCAA Division II career scorers and ninth among all active NCAA players.

Senior 6-7 forward Judah Alexander is averaging just below a double-double during the campaign with 10.8 ppg and 9.8 rebounds per game – third-best in the PBC.  Senior forward Warren Specht is adding 9.0 ppg and 5.3 rpg, while ranking first in the Peach Belt in three-point shooting (66.7%) and fifth in total field goal percentage (60.9%).

Junior Brandon Parker (16.5 ppg) and sophomore guard Jaquez Smith (7.0 ppg) both recorded career-highs with 26 and 14 points respectively in the team's most recent outing, a 103-88 win over Shaw University on Nov. 21.
