Parker led Patriots declaw Bears 103-88

FLORENCE, SC – Junior swingman Brandon Parker scored a career-high 26 points to pace six players in double figures as Francis Marion University raced past Shaw University 103-88, Tuesday evening (Nov. 21) in non-conference men's basketball action.

The Patriots remain unbeaten at 4-0, while the Bears drop to 2-4.  FMU also topped the century mark for the second straight game, the first time the Patriots have done that in back-to-back outings since the opening two contests of the 2012-13 campaign.

Francis Marion will open Peach Belt Conference play in its next outing, a Dec.2 contest at the University of North Georgia.  The next home game for FMU will be Dec. 17 at 1:30 p.m. against Georgia Southwestern State University.

Parker connected on 10-of 11 field goal attempts and finished just shy of the FMU single-game record of 12-of-12 set by Bob Graziano against Wofford College on Nov. 17, 1981. Included in Parker's total were a pair of three-pointers and the Sumter native was 4-of-5 at the foul line.  He also hauled down a career-high 10 rebounds to post his first career double-double.

Parker scored 12 points in the opening half and helped overcome the loss of senior guard Detrek Browning to early foul trouble.  However, Browning tallied 16 of his 19 points in the final half and in the process passed former Francis Marion great Louis McCullough to move into third place on the FMU career scoring list with 1,720 points. Browning also handed out six assists to pull within four of second place on that career list, and pulled down five rebounds to pass Liki Turner and take hold of 21st position on the career rebounding list.

FMU sophomore point guard Jaquez Smith registered a career-high 14 points, while  junior guard Ryan Harris added 13 points off the bench, and seniors Judah Alexander and Warren Specht chipped in 11 points apiece.

Sophomore guard DaVaughn Kelsie led Shaw with 33 points, including an 8-of-15 performance from three-point territory. Senior DeAngelo Stephens-Bell scored 20 points and recorded seven rebounds and seven assists.

The Bears had the early hot shooting hand and held a 36-32 advantage with 3:52 left before halftime.  A rebound dunk by Alexander ignited a 12-4 FMU run to end the half and the Patriots carried a 44-40 lead into the locker room.

The momentum continued in favor of Francis Marion after intermission as the Patriots opened the second stanza with a 9-1 run that produced a 53-41 margin.  A pair of free throws by Kelsie trimmed the FMU lead to 55-49 with 14:52 on the clock, but Francis Marion responded with a 14-2 run that put FMU on top 69-51 with 11:56 remaining.

The Bears however would not go away and later a three-pointer by Kelsie cut the lead to eight (87-79) with 4:32 on the clock, but again FMU answered the Bears' rally with a 10-2 spurt that gave the Patriots a commanding 97-81 margin.

Altogether, Francis Marion hit 20-of-29 field goal attempts (69 percent) over the final 20 minutes, and finished the game shooting 56.9 percent, including 7-of-20 from behind the arc.

Shaw connected on 49.2 percent of its shots, was 8-of-17 from long range, and the Bears sank 18-of-19 charity tosses.

Francis Marion held a 39-26 rebounding advantage and led 17-2 in second-chance points.
