Browning and Parker help Patriots to overtime win

FLORENCE, SC – Junior point guard Detrek Browning scored 26 points, including five in overtime, and sophomore swingman Brandon Parker added a career-high 23 as Francis Marion University outlasted Claflin University 84-78, Monday night (Feb. 13) in non-conference men's basketball action.

FMU improves to 10-15 with its second straight win.  The Patriots will play their final home game on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m., a key PBC contest against Lander University.  Francis Marion will recognize its three seniors prior to tip-off and it will also be Faculty Appreciation Night.

Browning scored 20 of his points after halftime.  He ended the night shooting 6-of-9 from the floor, including a near-perfect 5-of-6 from behind the three-point arc, and was 9-of-10 at the foul line.  Early in the contest, he passed former Patriot great Jerry Lattimore to move into sixth place on the FMU career scoring list with 1,556 points.

Parker notched his fourth 20-point game in the last 10 contests after never having reached that plateau before in his career.  He was 11-of-12 at the free throw stripe.

Junior guard Josh Council registered his second consecutive double-digit effort with 11 points off the FMU bench, while senior center Kenneth Jackson tallied 11 points and nine rebounds.

Guard Triston Thompson led Claflin (15-7) with 14 points, while Benjamin Williams chipped in 11 points and six rebounds.

The second half featured nine ties and neither team led by more than four points.  Parker made the second of a two-shot free throw opportunity with 8.2 seconds left to knot the game at 75-75 and force overtime.  Claflin missed on a potential game-winning three-point shot with three seconds remaining.

The Patriots opened the extra session with a one-point lead thanks to a technical foul shot by Browning, the result of a call again the Claflin bench after regulation ended. A lay-in by senior reserve center Samson Nnaji extended the margin to 78-75 with 3:10 on the clock.

With Francis Marion holding an 80-78 advantage entering the final minute, Claflin's Thompson missed on a lay-in with six ticks left and FMU's Judah Alexander grabbed the defensive rebound.  The ball was passed to Browning who was fouled, and following another technical on the Panthers, Browning nailed four free throws to seal the win.

Clafin scored the game's opening seven points and led 11-2 after five minutes.  FMU responded with eight straight points, but would not take the lead until a Browning three-pointer put the Patriots up 22-19.  A three-pointer by Thompson at the first-half horn snapped a tie and gave the Panthers a 35-32 halftime lead.

Francis Marion connected on 39.3 percent of its field goal attempts, including 11-of-22 from three-point territory, while the Panthers shot 39.1 percent and were 6-of-20 from beyond the arc.  FMU was 29-of-39 at the free throw line, while Claflin hit 22-of-29.
