Specht scores 19 in FMU loss to Falcons

FLORENCE, SC – The University of Montevallo closed the first half with a 21-2 run and the Falcons cruised to a 74-49 win over Francis Marion University, Thursday night (Jan. 5) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

Francis Marion (4-7, 0-3) will return to the Smith University Center court on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when the Patriots entertain Clayton State University.

Junior forward Warren Specht came off the bench to lead FMU with 19 points and six rebounds.  Junior guard Detrek Browning chipped in 10 points and five steals.

Senior 6-8 forward Javonte Douglas paced the Falcons (9-1, 3-0) with 25 points and 13 rebounds.  He and Browning entered the game ranked second and third respectively in the PBC scoring race. Montevallo is among the other schools receiving votes in this week's Top 25 poll.

After an opening bucket by FMU senior center Kenneth Jackson, the Falcons scored nine straight points to grab an early seven-point margin.  The lead grew to eight (18-10) after a lay-in by Montevallo's Jamaar Taylor with 11:08 left in the half.

Specht scored six points in an 8-0 Patriot run that knotted the score at 18-18.  After a Falcons' hoop, Judah Alexander drained a pair of free throws to again deadlock the contest at 20-20 with 6:48 left before halftime.  Montevallo scored 21 of the stanza's final 23 points to claim a 41-22 halftime advantage.  FMU hit only 1-of-11 shots and committed four turnovers during the fateful run.

Francis Marion trimmed the deficit to 19 points early in the second half and had chances to get closer as the Falcons were held scoreless for a span of 3:41, but the Patriots could not capitalize.

FMU finished the game shooting 28.6 percent and was 11-of-15 at the free throw line.  Montevallo connected on 48.3 percent of its field goal attempts, including making six three-pointers, and was 10-of-18 at the stripe.
