Patriot Men on target for 90-81 win over Nighthawks

FLORENCE, SC – Sophomore point guard Detrek Browning scored 20 points to lead five Francis Marion University players in double figures and the Patriots registered their second-best shooting performance of the season for a 90-81 win over the University of North Georgia, Monday afternoon (Jan. 18) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

FMU improves to 10-7 overall and 3-6 in the PBC, only one game out of third position in the East Division standings.  The Patriots will entertain USC Aiken on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center to complete a short two-game homestand.

Browning connected on 7-of-10 shots and was 6-of-7 at the foul line.  Twelve of his points came in the final eight minutes and helped erase a second-half rally by the Nighthawks.

Sophomore swingmen Mike Davis Jr. and A.J. Jackson tallied 19 and 17 points respectively, and the two combined to shoot 8-of-14 from behind the three-point arc.  Junior guard Alante Fenner added 13 points, while sophomore forward Judah Alexander just missed his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Junior guard Sean Brennan paced North Georgia (4-14, 2-7) with 17 points and 10 assists, while sophomore forward Juan Rivas registered 16 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists.  Both T.J. Williams and Tanner Plemmons added 14 points apiece.

Francis Marion shot 55.0 percent from the floor, including 8-of-18 from three-point territory, and was 16-of-23 at the charity stripe.  The Patriots made their final 10 free throws of the contest.

The first half featured end-to-end play with eight lead changes and four ties.  Trailing 29-28, Francis Marion outscored North Georgia 23-10 over the final 5:50 of the first stanza to claim a 51-39 advantage at halftime.  Jackson scored 15 of his points – on five three-pointers – during the opening 20 minutes.

The Patriots still clung to a double-digit lead (68-58) with 14:20 left, but the Nighthawks rallied to claim a 73-72 lead after a lay-in by Corey Green with 8:27 on the clock. Browning then scored FMU's next eight points as the Patriots re-gained the lead for good.

North Georgia did close to within 82-81 with three minutes remaining following a dunk by Williams off a Brennan feed.  However Francis Marion scored the game's final eight points, forcing the Nighthawks to miss their final five shots.  Junior 6-8 center Kenneth Jackson contributed two key buckets to the game-ending run.

The Patriots held North Georgia to 44.6 percent shooting, including 11-of-30 from long distance.  The Nighthawks made 12-of-14 free throws.
