Storm halts FMU streak at four wins

FLORENCE, SC – Despite a second-straight 25-point outing from freshman point guard Detrek Browning, Francis Marion University could not overcome an early deficit and fell to visiting Georgia Southwestern State University 85-74, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 14) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

The Patriots drop to 13-12 overall and 5-11 in the PBC, but despite the loss remain only one game behind USC Aiken for the all-important fourth position in the East Division standings. The loss ended a four-game winning streak all in conference play.

Francis Marion will play at GRU Augusta on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., before hosting the Pacers for Homecoming on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Browning connected on 8-of-12 field goal attempts, including 2-of-5 three-pointers, and was 7-of-11 at the free throw stripe.  Junior forward Dii'Jon Allen-Jordan added 15 points and five rebounds, while freshman swingman AJ Jackson tallied 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting.

Reserve guard Kevin Burnell led Georgia Southwestern (13-10, 8-8) with 20 points, while guard Deric Rudolph scored 17 points, including five three-pointers.

FMU scored the game's opening bucket – a jumper in the paint by sophomore Alex Bryant – but that would prove to be the Patriots' only lead of the afternoon.  GSW answered with eight straight points to lead 8-2.  A free throw by Allen-Jordan pulled Francis Marion to within 23-19 with 9:34 left before halftime, but the Hurricanes put together a 19-4 spurt that created a 19-point margin (42-23).

FMU did pull within 46-31 at intermission.  GSW shot 58.6 percent over the opening 20 minutes and was 7-of-12 from behind the three-point arc.  However, the Patriots shot 33.3 percent and were only 2-of-13 from long range.

Francis Marion trimmed the deficit to 11 points, 58-47, after a three-point play by Allen-Jordan with 14:33 remaining.  Georgia Southwestern responded with a 13-2 run that pushed the margin to 22 points.

A late flourish in the final minute allowed FMU to cut the advantage to 10 points at 84-74 after a Browning lay-in, but the Hurricanes were never seriously threatened.

For the game, Francis Marion shot 42.4 percent from the field, including 7-of-23 on three-pointers, and was 11-of-19 at the foul line.  The Hurricanes shot 49.2 percent, were 11-of-27 from deep, and hit 14-of-19 free throws.
