#15 Braves outlast Patriot Men in final minute, 68-66

FLORENCE, SC – Fifteenth-ranked UNC Pembroke outlasted an upset-minded Francis Marion University squad for a 68-66 Peach Belt Conference win as the Patriots missed on a last-second three-point heave from near midcourt, Wednesday night (Jan. 14) in men's basketball action.

Francis Marion falls to 8-8 overall and 0-7 in the Peach Belt.  Of the seven conference losses, six have been one possession games in the final minute.  FMU will conclude its three-game home stand on Saturday afternoon when the Patriots host Young Harris College at 3:30 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

Freshman point guard Detrek Browning led Francis Marion with 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists, while 6-7 junior forward Dii'Jon Allen-Jordan tallied 15 points, six rebounds, and six steals. Senior swingman Dustin Jones added 13 points and freshman Mike Davis Jr. chipped in 10 points off the bench.

Junior guard Quamain Rose led the Braves (15-1, 6-1) with 14 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, while reserve forward Ben Jacobs registered 13 points and six rebounds.

UNCP held a six-point lead (67-61) with 41 seconds left, but the Braves missed five of their final six free throws to give FMU a chance to rally.  Two free throws by Browning brought FMU to within 67-63 and a three-pointer by Davis cut the deficit to two, 68-66, with 18 seconds remaining.

Following two free throw misses by Rose, FMU had a chance to tie the score, but UNCP's Brandon Watts drew an offensive foul on Allen-Jordan.  Again the Braves missed two free throws at the other end, this time with five seconds on the clock and Jones grabbed the rebound after a loose ball, but the senior's heave from about 50 feet was no good.

The tight game featured seven ties and eight lead changes.

UNCP led by as many as 10 in the opening half, 21-11, before the Patriots rallied to knot the contest at 27-27 after a three-point play by Allen-Jordan.  Watts countered with a pair of free throws with just over a minute remaining in the half to give the Braves a 29-27 halftime advantage.

The Braves stretched their lead to seven, 44-37, with 13:10 left, but FMU responded with a 9-2 spurt to tie the game at 46-46.  The Patriots took their only leads of the second stanza at 52-51 and 54-53, the latter time following a fast-break layup by Allen-Jordan.

UNCP then tallied a 10-3 run to take a 63-57 advantage.

Francis Marion shot 37.7 percent from the floor, including 6-of-23 from three-point distance, while UNCP connected on 39.3 percent and was 7-of-22 from long distance.  The Patriots were 14-of-19 at the foul line, while the Braves were 13-of-21.

Both teams committed 16 turnovers, had 18 points-off-turnovers, and 28 points-in-the-paint.
