Francis Marion falls to Saints 83-78

FLORENCE, SC – Junior Dii'Jon Allen-Jordan and freshman Detrek Browning combined for 41 points, but Francis Marion University was unable to overcome a hot-shooting Flagler College squad as the Saints escaped with an 83-78 win over the Patriots, Wednesday night (Jan. 7) in Peach Belt Conference men's basketball action.

For the fourth consecutive PBC home contest, the game was decided in the final minute and unfortunately Francis Marion (7-6, 0-5) again came out on the short end, albeit not for lack of a huge second-half rally.

FMU will travel to Savannah, Ga., on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. match-up with Armstrong State University.  The Patriots will then return home to play three contests next week in the Smith University Center.

Allen-Jordan tallied 23 points, was a perfect 9-of-9 at the foul line, and grabbed five rebounds, while Browning scored 18 points.  Freshman post player Judah Alexander came off the FMU bench and chipped in nine points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Senior guard Jerrell Oxendine paced Flagler (6-6, 1-4) with 23 points, while three other Saints also scored in double digits.

FMU scored the game's opening 10 points, but Flagler rallied quickly to take 17-15 lead. The Saints shot a sizzling 75 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes, including 10-of-13 shots from beyond the three-point arc, and led 50-41 at halftime.

The hot start continued into the second stanza as Flagler connected on 20 of its first 26 shots from the floor and took a 60-43 lead with 14 minutes left.  FMU responded with a 13-2 run that trimmed the deficit to six points with 10:34 remaining.  Allen-Jordan contributed eight points to the spurt.

After Flagler pushed the margin back to double figures at 66-56 with 9:49 on the clock, the Patriots scored 11 of the contest's next 12 points to knot the game at 67-67 with 6:08 left.  A pair of free throws by Allen-Jordan forged the tie.

FMU took its only lead of the second half at 70-69 when freshman Mike Davis Jr. made 1-of-2 free throws with 3:54 remaining.  The Saints took the lead for good at 73-71 after a fast-break layup by Lydell Manigo.  Entering the final 50 seconds, Francis Marion trailed 79-76, but could not connect on a pair of three-point attempts and Oxendine sealed the decision with four straight free throws.

Francis Marion shot 39.7 percent from the floor, including 7-of-22 on three-point attempts, while Flagler cooled off somewhat to 61.4 percent.  FMU forced 25 Flagler turnovers and held a 25-14 advantage in points-off-turnovers.
