FMU’s Mackinson named Academic All-American

FMU’s Mackinson named Academic All-American

Francis Marion University senior shortstop CJ Mackinson has been named to the prestigious 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division II Baseball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Sykesville, Md., native was a second-team selection.

The Division II Google Cloud Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams.

Nineteen of the 33 Academic All-Americans have at least a 3.90 grade point average, with six student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA, including Mackinson, who is a management major.

Mackinson becomes the fifth Academic All-American for the Patriot baseball program, joining designated hitter Dalton Gress (2014), outfielder Buddy Sosnoskie (2012), outfielder Alex Lee (2010), and right-handed pitcher Sammy Ward (1980).

On the diamond, he started all 49 contests and batted .262 with seven doubles, three home runs, and 27 runs batted in. He registered 15 multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games, ranked seventh in the Peach Belt Conference with 136 fielding assists, and took part in turning 34 double plays – fourth-best in the PBC.  He was named to the PBC Baseball All-Academic Team for 2019.

At this spring's FMU Academic Awards Day ceremony, Mackinson received the Management Award (from the School of Business).  He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society and Chi Alpha Sigma national college athlete honor society. He has been named to the PBC Presidential and FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic honor roll on every possible occasion, and served on the University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee this past year.  As a junior in 2018, he was a second-team All-Conference selection and earned Patriot Team MVP honors.

He played two seasons at Frederick Community College before transferring to FMU.  He was a first-team All-County and a second-team All-Metro selection at Century High School.

Francis Marion (28-21) finished tied for sixth during the Peach Belt Conference regular season and posted a 10-win improvement over the 2018 campaign.
