Patriots stun #21 Mount Olive 4-1

MOUNT OLIVE, NC – Francis Marion University plated four runs in the top of the seventh inning and the pitching did the rest as the Patriots snagged a 4-1 victory at 21st-ranked University of Mount Olive on Friday evening (May 3) in non-conference baseball action.

The win is the first for FMU over Mount Olive since early in the 2012 season. The Trojans were ranked 21st in the national poll and fourth in the Southeast Regional poll this week.

The Patriots (26-19) conclude their regular season on Monday evening (May 6) at 6 p.m. as they welcome the Trojans (31-16) to Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium to complete the two squads' home-and-home series.

Francis Marion will then head to St. Augustine, Fla., for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, which begins on Friday, May 10. FMU's schedule and opponents for pool play will be determined following the final games of the PBC regular season this weekend.

The combination of senior right-hander Isaac Rodgers and junior lefty Josh Bobrowski (5-6) combined to hold Mount Olive to five hits. Rodgers limited the hosts to one run on three hits over five innings with three strikeouts in a no-decision. Bobrowski then blanked the Trojans on two hits over the final four frames to pick up the win in relief. The southpaw fanned five and retired the final five batters he faced to close out the contest.

Offensively, FMU was limited to six hits for the evening. Junior first baseman Leniel Gonzalez single and drove in a pair of runs with his team-leading ninth home run of the season, the highlighted hit of the seventh-inning outburst.

Mount Olive sophomore third baseman James Smibert also posted a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3 and driving in the Trojans' lone run of the game with a second-inning double.

Held to just two hits over the first six innings and trailing 1-0, Francis Marion rallied in the seventh. Freshman left fielder Will Hardee opened the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior right fielder Cole Hinnant. Senior center fielder Gage Taylor followed with an RBI single to tie the contest at 1-1.

The next batter, Gonzalez, launched a two-run homer to right to put the Patriots on top. Senior catcher Alex Griffith followed with a double, and eventually scored an insurance tally on a Mount Olive error.

FMU had a chance to add to its three-run edge in the top of the eighth, but left two runners on base. The Trojans put together a threat of their own in the bottom of the eighth, but with runners at second and third and one out, Bobrowski struck out the next two to keep FMU in front 4-1.

Freshman right-hander Reed Parris (8-4) absorbed the loss for UMO after surrendering all four Patriot runs, three of which were earned, in 6.1 innings.

Hardee also turned in a spectacular diving catch in deep left field to end the seventh inning.
