Patriot Baseball drops pair to Mountain Lions

YOUNG HARRIS, GA – The Francis Marion University baseball team dropped both ends of a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader to Young Harris College by scores of 14-0 and 6-3 on Sunday afternoon (March 17).

The Patriots (17-9, 9-6) conclude their five-game road trip with a non-conference tilt at Claflin University on Wednesday (March 20) at 6 p.m. Francis Marion returns to Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium to begin a three-game PBC series against Lander University on Friday night (March 22) at 6 p.m.

Francis Marion was limited to two hits in the opener, but drew 10 walks, the third time this season FMU has drawn double-digit walks in a single game. Freshman left fielder Will Hardee (one hit) and junior designated hitter Nick Pappas each reached three times.

Hardee also had a hit in game two to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.  Senior right fielder Cole Hinnant saw his 11-game streak end in Sunday's opener.

Senior center fielder Gage Taylor led FMU with three hits in the second contest. Junior first baseman Leniel Gonzalez added a pair of knocks and also drove in two.

Junior third baseman Brett Hawkins and senior left fielder Zavier Lushington registered four hits apiece for Young Harris (17-8, 6-4) in the opener. Senior shortstop Corley Reynolds went 3-for-3 in game two to lead the Mountain Lions' attack.

In the second game, the Patriots took a first-inning lead as Gonzalez plated Taylor with a two-out single.

The advantage was short-lived, as the Mountain Lions pushed across three in the second and another in the third to go on top 4-1.

Taylor and Gonzalez were at it again in the fifth, drawing FMU closer. Taylor singled home senior third baseman Fred Wadsworth, picking up his team-leading 31st RBI of the season. His total ranks second in the PBC. One out later, Gonzalez notched a run-scoring base hit of his own to bring the Patriots within one.

Francis Marion had the bases loaded with two outs in the frame, but sophomore right-handed reliever Dylan Nix (3-0) picked up a strikeout to keep Young Harris' lead intact. The Patriots did not put another runner into scoring position over the remainder of the contest.

The Mountain Lions answered with one in the home half of the fifth and added another insurance tally in the eighth.

Nix earned the win in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless frames with five strikeouts. Junior southpaw Josh Bobrowski (3-3) incurred the loss for FMU, surrendering six runs in 7.1 innings.

Young Harris quickly jumped out to an early lead in the opener, plating six unearned tallies in the second, then tacking on five more in the third for an 11-0 advantage.

The Mountain Lions registered single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth frames to cap off their offensive eruption.

Senior Dylan Gibeau (3-2) was the benefactor of all of the Young Harris offense, earning the win for his six scoreless innings. The righty gave up two hits, walked nine, and fanned five.

Sophomore lefty Weston Rogers (3-3) suffered the loss for Francis Marion, allowing six runs, all unearned, over 1.2 innings.
