First-place Patriots claw Mountain Lions 10-4 on baseball diamond

YOUNG HARRIS, GA – Junior designated hitter Nick Pappas returned to the Francis Marion University line-up and rapped out three hits and scored three times, while seniors CJ Mackinson and Gage Taylor had two hits apiece as the Patriots never trailed en route to a 10-4 win over Young Harris College, Saturday afternoon (March 16) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action.

Francis Marion improves to 17-7 overall and assumes sole possession of first place in the PBC standings with a 9-4 mark.  The two squads will conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Patriot senior catcher Alex Griffith homered for the third straight game, this time a grand slam.  Senior right fielder Cole Hinnant and freshman left fielder Will Hardee each registered a hit as well to extend their hitting streaks to 11 and eight games respectively.

Senior right-hander Evan Flynn remained unbeaten (4-0) as he pitched five innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits.  Junior righties Christian Umphlett and Patrick Orlando followed with two innings apiece.  Orlando earned his fourth save of the season.

Young Harris starter Cameron Williams (4-2) was tagged with the loss.  Center fielder Tucker Greer led the Mountain Lions with three hits from his lead-off spot, while second baseman Tristin Smith went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

FMU used a two-out rally to score twice in the first frame, with both tallies coming home on a double by junior first baseman Leniel Gonzalez.  The margin grew to 3-0 in the fourth when Hardee plated a run with an RBI-fielder's choice grounder.  Young Harris scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to draw within 3-2.

The Patriots tallied two runs in the fifth as Taylor scored on a wild pitch and Mackinson drove in a run with an infield grounder.  The Mountain Lions answered with a single run in the bottom of the fifth to trail 5-3.

An RBI-double by Pappas in the ninth preceded Griffith's grand slam – his second of the year and the Patriots' sixth four-run homer of the year.
