Bobrowski shuts down Bobcats as FMU takes rubber match

FLORENCE, SC – Junior left-handed pitcher Josh Bobrowski dealt a career-high 7.2 strong innings to help Francis Marion University to a 5-1 series-clinching victory over George College in Peach Belt Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon (March 10) at a sun-splashed Sparrow Stadium.

The Patriots (15-7, 8-4) will hit the road for their next five contests, beginning with a non-conference tilt at Limestone College on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Francis Marion returns home on Friday, March 22, to begin a three-game PBC series against Lander University.

Bobrowski (3-2) came out strong, retiring the first eight Bobcats (11-9, 5-5) he faced before issuing a two-out free pass in the third. The visitors did not register a hit off of the junior southpaw until the fourth. Georgia College had two on with one out in that fourth frame, but Bobrowski struck out the next two to escape unscathed.

After a leadoff single in the fifth, Bobrowski retired the next 11 in a row before surrendering a two-out solo homer to center in the eighth to Bobcats' senior right fielder Will Hudgins. For the afternoon, Bobrowski went 7.2 innings, and yielded one run on three hits, while fanning seven.

Senior center fielder Gage Taylor collected a pair of hits for FMU, the only player on either side to post a multi-hit effort. Patriots' senior right fielder Cole Hinnant went 1-for-4 and knocked in a run to extend his hitting streak to nine in a row. Hinnant leads the Peach Belt in batting average at .441.

Francis Marion opened the third inning by hitting for the cycle as a team to take the lead. Senior catcher Alex Griffith got things started, lining his second home run of the season over the wall in left-center field. After a redshirt freshman Tanner Wakefield infield single and Georgia College error, junior designated hitter Patrick Jackson tripled down the right field line to make it 2-0. Hinnant completed the cycle with a run-scoring double to right-center.

FMU tacked on another in the seventh on a pinch-hit RBI single by redshirt freshman Michael Kakos, which scored senior shortstop CJ Mackinson. It was the first collegiate RBI for Kakos.

Hudgins' launched his home run in the top of the eighth, but Francis Marion restored its four-run lead in the bottom of the frame, as junior second baseman Grayson Cottingham raced home on a wild pitch.

Following Bobrowski, junior righties Ethan Meece and Patrick Orlando closed out the victory for FMU with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief work. Senior righty Chandler Amason (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Georgia College, allowing four runs and striking out five in six innings.
