Mackinson belts 2 homers in 16-4 Patriot triumph

FLORENCE, SC – Senior shortstop CJ Mackinson went 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs and drove in five runs to lead Francis Marion University to a 16-4 win over Chowan University, Wednesday afternoon (March 6) in non-conference baseball action.

Francis Marion improves to 13-6 with its fifth double-figure run total in the last six games.  The Patriots will host Georgia College for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series this weekend consisting of a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Mackinson becomes only the second Patriot to homer twice in a game at Sparrow Stadium. He has safely reached base in each of the last 16 contests.

Senior catcher Alex Griffith, who bats eighth just ahead of Mackinson in the order, was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and one driven in.  Senior right fielder Cole Hinnant posted his 11th multiple-hit game of the season with a 2-for-4 day and junior designated hitter Patrick Jackson and junior first baseman Leniel Gonzalez both had two hits.

A trio of Chowan errors in the bottom of the second inning helped lead to a six-run outburst by FMU. Three Patriots registered RBI singles – Griffith, Mackinson, and Gonzalez – while Hinnant plated one run with an infielder grounder and senior center fielder Gage Taylor hit a sacrifice fly.

Chowan scored twice in the third frame and chased FMU starter and junior right-hander Colby Lee, who was making his first start as a Patriot.

However, FMU responded in the bottom of the frame with a fistful runs to take an 11-2 advantage.  Mackinson hit a two-homer to the base of the scoreboard in left centerfield and Taylor and Gonzalez delivered run-scoring singles, while junior second baseman Grayson Cottingham hit a sacrifice fly.

The margin grew to 13-2 in the fourth as Hinnant stroked an RBI single to center and Taylor plated a run with the Patriots' third sacrifice fly of the contest. Taylor, who also made a diving catch in shallow center in the top of the second, leads the Peach Belt Conference with 30 RBIs in 19 games.

Mackinson's second long ball, a two-run shot to left in the fifth, extended the lead to 15-2. Freshman Will Hardee accounted for the final FMU tally with an RBI ground ball in the sixth inning.

Junior righty Christian Umphlett (2-1) followed Lee and hurled 1.2 innings of shutout ball. Junior right-handers Will Taks and Linc Powell finished up the seven-inning contest.

Chowan sophomore southpaw Ryan Gallaccio (1-1) was the losing pitcher.  Nick Rose led the Hawks (7-6-1) at the plate with two hits and two RBIs.
