Patriots continue hitting barrage in 14-6 win over Chowan

FLORENCE, SC – Junior second baseman Grayson Cottingham drove in five runs, including a grand slam, to power Francis Marion University to a 14-6 victory over Chowan University, Tuesday afternoon (March 5) in non-conference baseball action.

Francis Marion, now 12-6, registers a double-figure run total for the fourth time in the past five games, while Chowan dips to 7-5-1.  The squads will conclude their two-game series on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. first pitch on Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium.

Senior right-hander Isaac Rodgers remained unbeaten at 3-0 as he pitched six innings and allowed only five hits and two runs.  He struck out six Hawks.  Three Patriot relievers hurled an inning apiece.

Cottingham finished 2-for-4, while freshman left fielder Will Hardee was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two driven in, and a pair of doubles.  Senior right fielder Cole Hinnant went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a homer, and two runs batted in.

Hinnant gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning.  Later in the first, a pair of errors led to another FMU run as Cottingham plated senior center fielder Gage Taylor with a sacrifice fly to right centerfield.

In the last of the second, a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Patrick Jackson and an RBI single to right by Taylor doubled the Patriot advantage to 4-0.  Taylor leads the Peach Belt Conference with 26 RBIs in 18 games.

In the third, Cottingham, a product of West Florence High School, led off with a single, stole second, and scampered home on a Hawks' fielding error.

A trio of runs in the fifth upped the margin to 8-0. Hardee doubled down the left field line scoring a pair of unearned runs.  The South Florence graduate then moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on another wide offering.

After the Hawks scored twice in the top of the sixth to draw within 8-2, Francis Marion answered right back with a Hinnant RBI single to center and the grand slam home run by Cottingham – the Patriots' fifth grand slam in 18 contests this season.

Chowan freshman lefty Slade Cowan (0-1) suffered the loss in his first collegiate start as he allowed the first four FMU runs.

A trio of Chowan hitters collected two hits apiece: second baseman Brock Cross, right fielder Marquise Lanier, and third baseman Dallas Trevena.
