Flynn, FMU blank Davis & Elkins 19-0

FLORENCE, SC – Senior right-hander Evan Flynn and four Francis Marion University relievers combined on a four-hitter, as the Patriots shutout Davis & Elkins College 19-0 in a non-conference baseball tilt on Saturday evening (Mar. 2).

Next up for the Patriots (11-6) is a pair of non-conference games at Sparrow Stadium against Chowan University on Tuesday and Wednesday (Mar. 5-6). First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, and 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Flynn (3-0) was in a groove from the first pitch, retiring the first 11 Senators (0-9) he faced. The senior yielded two hits over his five scoreless frames, and equaled his career high with eight strikeouts.

Offensively, junior first baseman Leniel Gonzalez led the charge for FMU with a pair of hits and a career-high six runs batted in. Redshirt freshman Tanner Wakefield also had two knocks, and scored four times. For the contest, nine different Patriots scored at least once, and 10 had at least one RBI.

Gonzalez got Francis Marion on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-run double, then capped a six-run second with a grand slam. The long ball was Gonzalez's second homer of the day, having gone deep in the Patriots' earlier contest against Newberry College. The junior leads FMU with three home runs this season.

The Patriots pushed across six more in the third, extending their advantage to 14-0. Senior center fielder Gage Taylor knocked in two with a double in the frame, pushing his RBI total to a Peach Belt-leading 25.

Francis Marion tacked on four in the fifth and one in the eighth to complete the evening's scoring.

Behind Flynn, the right-handed relief quartet of senior Warren Specht, junior Will Taks, junior Colby Lee, and freshman Brayden Berry completed FMU's first shutout of the season with one scoreless inning apiece. In total, Patriot pitching struck out 13 Senators, while allowing just seven baserunners.

Junior Max Larimore (0-3) took the loss for Davis & Elkins, surrendering 12 runs, nine of which were earned, over 2.1 innings.
