Wolves outlast Patriots 10-9 in 13-inning contest

FLORENCE, SC – Nick Butler's two-out run-scoring single in the top of the 13th inning gave Newberry College the lead and the Wolves stranded two runners on base in the bottom of the frame en route to a 10-9 win over Francis Marion University, Saturday evening (March 2) in non-conference baseball action.

FMU (10-6) played Davis & Elkins College later Saturday evening in the final game of the two-day round-robin event.

Senior right fielder Cole Hinnant and red-shirt freshman Tanner Wakefield led the Patriots at the plate with three hits apiece.  Hinnant had a triple and drove in two runs, while Wakefield's total included a double and he drove in two runs.

The Wolves plated an unearned run in the top of the first on Tyler White's RBI single to left center field.  Newberry took a 2-0 lead in the second when a runner scored on a wild pitch.

FMU drew within 2-1 in the third when junior first baseman Leniel Gonzalez launched a solo homer over the right field wall.  In the third, junior Nick Pappas knotted the score at 2-2 with a run-scoring single through the right side and junior second baseman Grayson Cottingham put FMU ahead 3-2 with an RBI single.

After Newberry tied the score in the top of fifth, the Patriots plated four tallies in the bottom of the inning to go up 7-3.  A sacrifice fly by senior catcher Alex Griffith preceded a two-run double to left by Wakefield.  The third baseman then scored on a fielder's choice grounder by senior center fielder Gage Taylor.

The Wolves posted three runs in the sixth and then re-tied the score at 7-7 in the eighth when Dalton Lansdowne tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Danton Hyman.

FMU left the potential winning run on third in the last of the ninth, and then stranded three runners in the bottom of the 10th.

A throwing error and a wild pitch allowed Newberry to score twice in the top of the 11th inning, but FMU rallied with the tying runs in the bottom of the frame.  Hinnant tripled to right centerfield scoring Wakefield and pinch runner Nicky Winterstein.  Hinnant was then tagged out at home trying to score on a one-out grounder to second base.

A one-out walk, a stolen base, a ground ball out, and Butler's single through the right side gave Newberry a 10-9 advantage in the top of the 13th inning.  Francis Marion got a couple of runners on base with only one out in its half of the inning, but Newberry reliever Jonathan Elicier (1-0) induced the next two batters to fly out ending the four-hour 27-minute marathon.

FMU junior righty Christian Umphlett (1-1) was tagged with the loss as he pitched the final 2.2 innings.  Patriot sophomore southpaw Weston Rogers started the game and went 4.2 innings, allowing only one earned run with two strikeouts.
