FMU has streak snapped in finale against Flagler

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University saw its six-game winning streak come to an end with a 5-2 loss to Flagler College on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 17) in the finale of the three-game Peach Belt Conference baseball series.

Francis Marion (8-3, 5-1) hits the road on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup against Belmont Abbey College at 3 p.m. The Patriots return to Sparrow Stadium for Homecoming Weekend from Friday through Sunday (Feb. 22-24) to host USC Aiken for a three-game series.

Senior right fielder Cole Hinnant was the lone Patriot with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 to raise his season average to .458, the second-highest average in the Peach Belt.

Flagler (6-5, 1-2) was held to five hits by the FMU pitching staff, with junior second baseman Ja'Kobi Dasher collecting two of the five, and driving in a run.

Francis Marion was down to its final out in the bottom of the ninth, but put the next three runners on to load the bases for senior center fielder Gage Taylor, the PBC leader in runs batted in. However, Saints' right-handed reliever Ethan Jones was able to induce a ground out to lock down his first save of the season and help the visitors avoid the sweep. FMU left 10 runners on base in the contest.

Patriot senior shortstop CJ Mackinson had a single in the ninth-inning effort which extended his hitting streak to eight games.

The Patriots opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Junior third baseman Patrick Jackson led off by ripping a double to left field, and eventually scoring after a pair of wild pitches.

FMU's lead held until the fourth. With one out, Flagler picked up its first two hits of the afternoon off of Patriots' junior left-handed starter Josh Bobrowski (1-2), and following a wild pitch, the score was tied at 1-1. An error put runners on second and third with one out for Saints' senior third baseman Frankie Martello, who put the visitors on top with a sacrifice fly. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, another Francis Marion error allowed two more runs to score. Due to the errors, just one of the four runs allowed by Bobrowski over his four innings was earned.

Flagler tacked on an insurance tally in the seventh on an RBI single by Dasher. The Patriots pulled a run back in the bottom of the eighth when a ground out by junior first baseman Leniel Gonzalez scored Hinnant.

The Saints used a total of six pitchers on the afternoon, with sophomore southpaw Jett Walsh (1-1) earning the win for his 3.1 innings of shutout relief.
