Mackinson, Rogers propel Patriots to sixth straight victory

FLORENCE, SC – Senior shortstop CJ Mackinson drove in the tying and go-ahead runs and sophomore left-hander Weston Rogers dealt eight strong innings to send Francis Marion University to its sixth straight win, 4-2 over Flagler College, in Peach Belt Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 16).

Francis Marion (8-2, 5-0) and Flagler (5-5, 0-2) conclude their three-game weekend series at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Sparrow Stadium.

Mackinson was one of three Patriots with multiple hits, as junior second baseman Grayson Cottingham and junior first baseman Leniel Gonzalez had a pair of knocks apiece.

Rogers (2-0) gave FMU eight innings for the second straight start, yielding a pair of runs on six hits. The southpaw added four strikeouts, including striking out the final batter he faced to keep the contest tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Freshman left fielder Will Hardee reached on an error to begin the home half of the eighth, and moved into scoring position after a Cottingham sacrifice bunt. Mackinson then singled the opposite way, and Hardee slid into home plate just ahead of the tag to put FMU back on top 3-2. The Patriots added an insurance tally later in the inning, as junior designated hitter Nick Pappas drew a bases-loaded walk.

Junior righty Ethan Meece came on for Francis Marion in the top of the ninth and worked around a one-out walk to earn his first save as a Patriot.

Francis Marion struck first on a Gonzalez RBI double in the third, which brought home senior center fielder Gage Taylor. Flagler answered with two in the top of the fourth on back-to-back two-out run-producing singles by junior second baseman Ja'Kobi Dasher and sophomore center fielder Nikolas Dague.

Mackinson brought FMU level in the bottom of the fourth with a double, which plated Cottingham.

Senior right-handed reliever Ryan Ashworth (1-1) was tagged with the loss for Flagler, yielding two unearned tallies over 2.1 innings. Senior southpaw Robert Girgis started for the Saints and gave up two runs on five hits, with six walks and five strikeouts over five innings to earn a no-decision.
