Bobrowski’s arm and Taylor’s bat help FMU complete sweep

AUGUSTA, GA – Junior left-handed pitcher Josh Bobrowski hurled seven sparkling innings and senior center fielder Gage Taylor launched a grand slam as Francis Marion University won 7-2 to complete a sweep of its weekend series at Augusta University, in Peach Belt Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 10).

FMU (5-2, 3-0) returns to Sparrow Stadium on Tuesday (Feb. 12) to take on Wingate University at 3 p.m.

Bobrowski (1-1) yielded just a solitary hit, an infield single on runner's interference in the fourth, over his seven frames of work. The southpaw allowed one unearned tally and fanned nine, the most strikeouts racked up by an FMU pitcher in a single outing this season, on his way to his first win as a Patriot.

Taylor paced Francis Marion's offense with three hits, including his grand slam, and scored three times. Freshman second baseman Tanner Wakefield, junior designated hitter Nick Pappas, and senior catcher Alex Griffith had two hits apiece.

FMU's pitching staff held the Jaguars (3-4, 0-3) to four hits for the afternoon. Sophomore shortstop Mason Robertson picked up one of Augusta's four hits, and also drew a pair of walks.

With the contest even at 1-1 in the seventh, Taylor and Pappas notched back-to-back two-out doubles to give Francis Marion the lead.

FMU then pulled away with a five-run eighth inning. Senior third baseman Patrick Jackson knocked in a run with a ground ball, and one out later, Taylor launched his grand slam off of Augusta freshman right-hander Alex Colon (0-1). It was the senior's first long ball of the year and second grand slam of the weekend for the Patriots after Griffith hit one in game one of Saturday's twin bill.

Junior righties Ethan Meece and Linc Powell worked the eighth and ninth frames, respectively, to complete the sweep for FMU.

The Jaguars scratched across a run in the fourth. Sophomore second baseman Trent Maddox reached on an error, stole second, and then came around to score after a pair of wild pitches to make it 1-0.

After stranding two runners on base and coming up empty in the third and fifth frames, FMU finally dented the scoreboard in the sixth on a Griffith RBI single. The Patriots loaded the bases later in the inning, but could not strike again to take the lead.

Sophomore southpaw Charlie Cochran started on the hill for Augusta, allowing one run on eight hits over five frames to earn a no-decision.
