Francis Marion University senior catcher Alex Griffith has been named the starting catcher on the North Roster for the 2018 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) All-Star Game, as announced Sunday afternoon by the league office. The NECBL All-Star Game will be hosted by the defending champion Valley Blue Sox at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke Mass., on Sunday, July 29.
Each All-Star Team is comprised of nine slots for pitchers (starting pitcher, seven relievers, and closer); a starter and two substitute catchers; a starter and substitute for the four remaining infield positions; a starter and substitute designated hitter; three starting outfielders and three reserve outfielders; and one coach's selection by each manager for a total of 29 players per squad.
The All-Star Game showcases the NECBL's top talent in a fun-filled afternoon and evening with players showcasing their skills in front of scouts from every Major League Baseball (MLB) organization. Pregame ceremonies are scheduled for 5:10 p.m., with first pitch to follow shortly afterward.
Griffith is currently batting .263 with five doubles, five home runs, and 15 runs batted in playing for the Keene Swamp Bats. He has committed only one error in 220 fielding chances. The Swamp Bats are 21-16 and in third place in the NECBL's Northern Division.
He was also an All-Star selection during the 2017 summer.
In his first season at FMU in 2018, Griffith played in all 46 games while batting .279 with 12 doubles, five homers, and 30 RBIs.
A native of Bristol, Va., Griffith played his first two seasons at the University of Pittsburgh before transferring to Francis Marion.
