Hurricanes take series finale from Patriots 4-3

FLORENCE, SC –  A pair of Georgia Southwestern State University pitchers kept the recently-hot hitting Francis Marion University bats in check on Sunday afternoon (April 22) as the Hurricanes took the final game of the three-game Peach Belt Conference series by a 4-3 score.

Francis Marion ends its 2018 home season with an 18-28 overall record and a 9-21 conference mark. By virtue of Lander University's loss on Sunday at USC Aiken, FMU continues to hold the final berth for the 2018 PBC Tournament, to be held May 11-13 in Florida.  The Bearcats will need to win two of three games against the University of North Georgia this coming weekend to knock the Patriots out of the tournament and wrestle away the final berth.

Junior center fielder Gage Taylor led Francis Marion on Sunday with two hits, while junior shortstop CJ Mackinson drove in two runs.  Junior right fielder Cole Hinnant picked up a third-inning single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games and his streak of safely reaching base to 21 consecutive games.

Patriot freshman right-hander Austin Roseberry (3-2) pitched 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on four hits, although two of the runs were unearned.  He struck out four and walked two.  Senior southpaw Arien Seymour and sophomore righty Christian Umphlett combined to toss 4.2 scoreless frames in relief.

GSW senior righty Kyle Spinks (2-6) went 7.2 innings and scattered five hits, while allowing three runs and fanning eight.  Freshman Harrison Timberlake earned his second save of the season by finishing out the contest and extinguishing a bases-loaded rally in the eighth.

FMU had put up double-figure run totals in each of the past four games.

As they did in each game of the series, the Patriots scored in the first inning.  Mackinson lined a two-run single up the middle to put Francis Marion up 2-0.

After Georgia Southwestern scored once in the top of both the second and third innings to tie the contest, FMU retook the lead when Hinnant scored on a two-out wild pitch in the bottom of the third.

With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Hurricane first baseman Jared Jones hit a grounder that was errored on and two runs scored to give GSW its first lead of the series at 4-3.

After that rally, Spinks retired 11 consecutive Francis Marion batters until the Patriots loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth inning.  Timberlake came in and got the final out of that frame and then stranded the potential tying run on second base in the bottom of the ninth.

Center fielder Josh Logan had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Hurricanes.

In addition to Seymour, six other Patriots were honored in a pre-game Senior Day event: catcher William Robbins, first baseman Trey Chapman, designated hitter Tee DuBose, infielder Justin Palmer, left-handed pitcher Adam Hornstra, and right-handed pitcher Austin Griffie.
