Hinnant, High, and Flynn help Patriots to sweep of Georgia Southwestern

FLORENCE, SC – Junior right fielder Cole Hinnant banged out five hits and scored eight runs, while Francis Marion University right-handed pitchers Sam High and Evan Flynn each provided quality starts as the Patriots swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday afternoon (April 21), winning by the scores of 11-8 and 13-3.

FMU has won three straight games to up its overall record to 18-27, while also improving to 9-20 in conference play and strengthening its hold on the final berth to the 2018 PBC Tournament.  FMU and GSW will conclude their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. With it being the final home game of 2018, the Patriots will honor their seven seniors prior to the first pitch.

The championship round of the second-annual Batting for Babies competition will immediately follow the game on Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium.

In Saturday's opener, Francis Marion scored five times in the first inning, twice in the second, and led 10-0 after six innings.

High (2-2) pitched seven frames and allowed three runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking two.

Junior shortstop CJ Mackinson registered four RBI-singles in the opener, while four Patriots rapped out two hits: sophomore second baseman Patrick Jackson, junior center fielder Gage Taylor, junior third baseman Alex Griffith, and Hinnant.  Taylor drove in three runs, while Hinnant scored four times and Jackson crossed home plate three times.

GSW starter Kyle Britt (3-4) took the loss as he was knocked from the game in the second inning after surrendering seven runs.  Junior second baseman Jason Baita went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and first baseman Jared Jones went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

In the second contest, again the Patriots jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning and three times in the second frame.  The two squads traded single tallies in the third, but FMU scored three times in the fourth and four times in the fifth to open a 13-1 advantage.

Senior first baseman Trey Chapman started the four-run fifth inning with a solo homer over the right centerfield wall.

Hinnant went 3-for-4 in game two with two runs batted in and four runs scored.  He also extended his hitting streak to nine games and his streak of safely reaching base to 20 consecutive contests.  Junior third baseman Steven Cox was a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored, while Griffith, Jackson, and senior designated hitter William Robbins each had two hits.

Flynn (2-4) pitched seven frames and scattered 11 hits, while allowing just two runs with five strikeouts and two walks.

Georgia Southwestern (8-32, 4-22) stranded 14 runners on base in the second contest.  Third baseman Bradley Hough led the Hurricanes with three hits.

GSW righty Mitch Holloway (2-9) suffered the loss, although three Hurricane errors led to five unearned runs.

The Patriots have now scored in double figures in each of the past four games, totaling 53 runs on 57 base hits.
