Mackinson and Reneo key Francis Marion past Claflin 18-6

ORANGEBURG, SC – Junior shortstop CJ Mackinson went 3-for-5 including a double and a home run with five runs batted in as Francis Marion University cruised to an 18-6 non-conference road victory over Claflin University, Wednesday night (April 18) in college baseball action.

Francis Marion improves 16-27, while the Panthers drop to 13-25.  FMU will play its final home games of the season this weekend with a three-game Peach Belt Conference series against Georgia Southwestern State University, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Freshman left-hander Antonio Reneo (1-1) pitched six strong innings to record his first collegiate win.  He allowed only two hits and one run, while striking out five.

FMU junior center fielder Gage Taylor was 4-for-6 with a run scored and one driven in, while sophomore second baseman Patrick Jackson had two hits, four runs scored, and one RBI and senior catcher William Robbins registered two hits, a run scored, and three RBIs.

Claflin starter Chazz Walker (0-2) took the loss as he surrendered the first five Patriot runs.  Johnathan Purnell II led the Panthers at the plate with three hits, including a three-run homer.

Jackson walked to lead off the game and quickly scored on a double by junior right fielder Cole Hinnant.  After a ground out, Mackinson blasted a two-run homer to increase the Patriot advantage to 3-0.

Francis Marion scored four times in the second on a two-run single to right field by Robbins and a two-run homer by senior first baseman Trey Chapman.  The Patriots would eventually lead 10-1 after three innings.

Claflin scored five times in the seventh to draw within 10-6, but FMU answered with an eight-run outburst in the top of the eighth.  Mackinson delivered a two-run double and sophomore outfielder Austin Fox lined a two-run triple.

The pitching trio of sophomores Sam High, Garrett Wilson, and Will Taks combined to toss 2.2 scoreless frames after the Claflin rally.

The 18 runs represented a season high, while Francis Marion's 17 hits equaled a season high.
